Total Solar Eclipse

With the rest of the nation, we were so excited about observing the total solar eclipse! Arlington, VA only had about 90% coverage, but that was still super fun! We watched the area of totality on TV:
 We didn't have eclipse glasses, so we made our own cereal box viewers:

 At the time when the eclipse was at its peak, it was so neat being able to see the tiny eclipses in the shadows of the trees!

Theodore Roosevelt Island seems to be one of the lesser-known attractions from the DC area, but it was really neat! It's only about 1.25 miles from our apartment, so we decided to hike there on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. We enjoyed hiking the beautiful island as well! On the bridge across from Virginia:  The center of the island has a beautiful monument to Theodore Roosevelt: The monument contains several of Roosevelt's most famous quotes: The island itself is also quite large and great for hikes. We're glad we found this hidden gem!

Grandma's Visit: Smithsonian National Zoo

We had been saving the National Zoo to do with Grandma, because we knew that would be a fun thing to do with her. The zoo did not disappoint!  We saw an elephant training show that was really neat! Those elephants were so smart!  Elias got a kick out of this interactive display about learning about an elephant's health by investigating its poop...  The zoo had an orangutan baby born this year, and he was SOOOOO cute!! They have a research project with the orangutans where they are studying their ability to learn. They have a touchscreen and are using rewards to try to teach the orangutan to touch the numbers in order. She's doing a great job! And the baby enjoyed getting his grape rewards without even having to do any work! :)  Elias LOVED this water play area that was next to the sea lion exhibit!  It was not a particularly hot day when we were there, but Elias still enjoyed the misters.  He was all wet and sparkly from...

Polo Club

We live very near the Manila Polo Club - we can actually watch matches out our living room window. However, the US Embassy also allows us to go to matches for free. None of us had ever been to a polo match before, so we were excited to give it a try. It was fun, and quite a luxurious experience! Stomping the divots between matches! (Just like in Pretty Woman! Who knows what I'm talking about! :) ) Elias lost interest after a while, so he and I explored the rest of the Polo Club while Justin continued to hang out with his work friends. We discovered a cute little children's garden. There was also some exercise equipment that was good for climbing, and it was right on the edge of the polo field, so we had a great view of the match! It was quite peaceful down there, and we enjoyed watching the rest of the match from there. We are grateful for the opportunity, and we hope to go back again before polo season ends in March!
